I follow US politics like it’s a high stakes soap opera, and while I love my drama, yes, it would DEFINITELY be better than your current system. But then again, basically all forms of democracy are better than your current system 😉

I disagree. The system of government here, in my opinion, is great. Don't believe everything you see on TV. I do not believe that divesting the population of its power to elect their representatives would be a better approach. I also believe that the checks-and-balances approach of our republic do a pretty good job, for the most part, to contain the corrupting influence of power. Ultimately, if the people don't like their representatives, they can vote. Why should the people submit to the tyranny of random selection?

@Pierre Thierry I did not mean to suggest that nothing should be done about corruption. But, just that the "randomly selected people" are as likely to be corruptible as elected politicians, and perhaps even more so: One can imagine, for example, corporations throwing all sorts of money or other perks at someone who up until that moment had barely survived on less than $20,000 annual income. If those people are unelected and cannot be removed by the people, then I think it would actually be worse than what is currently in place today.

@Pierre Thierry I figured I should make time to get on here and explain my earlier statements, so here goes.... Whether or not you think the current system is good or bad, when a political candidate is elected into office, that person's credentials are scrutinized by the public; generally speaking, and perhaps with some notable exceptions, people who are unfit for office are screened out, because the electorate does not generally act irrationally. Thus, in general, candidates who are elected into office are less likely to have character defects that lend themselves to improper influence. Please note that I recognize that this is not always the case. That said, however, randomly selecting people to hold political power without further screening of those individuals is likely to lead to selection of representatives who are not fit to hold those positions... there may be issues with drug, alcohol, debt, dishonesty, etc. These issues, in my view, would cause that individual to be more susceptible to the undue influence of special interests than a candidate who has been properly vetted.

@Hyp☀️li🌷e Pet🌸van The flaw in America's political system has more to do with society than with the political system per se. We have some serious issues here with education and political engagement. I regularly correspond with my representatives, and on a few occasions, I have had productive dialogs. However, I know many people who do not bother to contact their state or federal government representatives. Many of those people think that political engagement means posting a meme about Trump on Facebook. Also, a very large percentage of eligible voters do not vote. I firmly believe that whatever problems we have are problems that we deserve, because we, the people, have not exercised the power that is vested in us.

Anyway, I need to get back to studying for the bar exam....
